A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
