Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
