British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
