Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
