The feeling at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a thread holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he publicly stated that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.
The Youngster's Surprising Return
At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster lacking backup options.
He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Finding His Best Role
It's possible the coach was persistently working to determine the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
